Exercise Caution with Investment Adverts: Guidance from the Academy of Life Planning
In our commitment to championing a journey towards financial well-being that is built on the foundations of integrity and transparency, we feel it's imperative to cast a light on an issue of growing concern, as highlighted by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
The past year saw an alarming trend with over 10,000 financial adverts and promotions undergoing withdrawal or amendment, indicative of a broader issue within the realm of financial guidance, particularly on social media platforms. The FCA's efforts in issuing 450 consumer alerts against illegal crypto asset promotions and enhancing overall consumer protection with 2,285 alerts against scams underscore the challenges facing consumers in today's digital finance landscape.
With the tightening of regulations as of 7th February 2024, requiring authorised firms to obtain permission from the FCA to approve promotions, a step has been taken towards ensuring competency and expertise in financial promotions. However, the crux of the matter remains the sheer volume of investment opportunities being advertised, often appealing to a younger demographic and leading to potentially risky financial decisions.
The Academy of Life Planning advocates for a return to financial basics, echoing the sentiments of Christopher Woolard, former CEO of the FCA, who emphasised that "The overwhelming majority of retail investors are best served by readily understood, well-diversified, and low-cost investments, which are already available from a range of providers." Yet, many investors stray from these safer paths, lured by the promise of quick gains.
In the last year alone, financial scams on social media led to UK consumers losing £75 million, with platforms like Instagram and Facebook becoming hotbeds for such fraudulent activities. This serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for vigilance and due diligence when encountering financial adverts.
At the Academy, we urge you to approach all investment adverts with a healthy dose of scepticism. Our ethos is to empower you with knowledge and tools to make informed financial decisions, fostering a holistic approach to achieving your 'Kokoro'—a life enriched not just financially, but also emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
Let's navigate the financial landscape with caution, prioritising simple, diversified, and low-cost investments that have stood the test of time. Together, we can create a future where financial security is a reality for all.
Stay informed, stay prudent, and let's continue on our path to a transparent and secure financial future.
